I have been an entrepreneur since 1999 and have evolved my business over the years to it's current focus - web and social media. Over those years I have certainly provided services to prospects, existing customers, and friends without charging them for my time.
Most of the time, I felt that doing some work would lead to a better opportunity, a bigger sale. Well, my experience shows that if you do something for free it rarely leads to the bigger sale. In fact, it has the reverse effect, in that , it creates an expectation of Free.
Obviously, Free and running a business does not go hand in hand (unless you want to get out of your business). I learned that you must charge for your services at all times. People will value your service much greater and will respect your time as well - it was the best decision I made.
In any event check out this link from Designer Jessica Hische if you are looking for some more insight on whether you should be charging for your services.
Let me know your thoughts.
